What happens if you open the three chests in Rhys' cell prior to the wedding scene? Well... You end up trapped in Landen forever. The flag for Lena to come and break Rhys out is opening the three chests in his cell. If you do that before you are supposed to Lena will appear in front of the cell and the guards just sort of drop you off there and the cell door will shut without you inside. I guess it's because she's blocking the way and you can't walk through sprites.

In this case you cannot interact with Lena at all. Even if you walk through the wall and try to talk to her from behind the cell door nothing will happen. She will disappear forever if you leave the dungeon after opening the chests.

There is a variation though. Start the wedding as normal then when Rhys gets locked in the cell don't open the chests. Instead walk through the wall then exit/reenter through the stairs you came in at. Or use an escapipe and just walk into the now open cell. Lena will be there. You can talk to get from where the cell door would normally be. She'll introduce herself and ask you to follow her. But the sequence is broken and she'll go way ahead without Rhys following her. When she stops the rest of the scene will not play out. And the old man will still be blocking the exit to the overworld.

Either way, there's no normal escape from Landen. The castle in the first gen is always stuck in pre-wedding mode. But the wedding cannot be started again. Talking to the king just brings up the escapipe message. There's no way to interact with Maya and the old man never moves away from the town exit.

I have not tried this on an actual cartridge. I'm thinking it would work well with the escapipe. But I have never used the escapipe before opening the chests.
