No codes were used although you can use the walk through walls method if you want to. Here I just used an escapipe. As long as you don't open the chests Lena will still appear if you reenter the cell after leaving the dungeon/using an escapipe. But her even sequence is broken. Rhys can't automatically follow her and when you do catch up the second conversation won't take place. And because of this the event isn't finished. The second part of Lena's conversation seems to be the flag that removes the old man from the town's exit. So unless you use the walk through walls code there is no escape.
At least entering the overworld before finishing the first event doesn't automatically warp you back to town like in Phantasy Star 4.
