Items In Phantom Brave are handled like pseudo-characters, they have their own stats and even have HP and gain experience/level up as well. When a character is removed from a battle there is a chance that they will take whatever they were confined in back to the island with them. The probability of taking home an item is dependent on the character's levels and Steal stat. This where Bottlemails really shine, as their ridiculously high steal stat mean they are pretty much guaranteed to take home whatever you confine them in which makes farming for items so much easier.

PS - Did you know that you have to have Marona summon a character back at the island before you can use them in battle? Well I had forgotten that little tidbit, so I actually had to reset and go back to be able to use my Bottlemail here. Fortunately the end of the last battle was a nice cut-off point so no harm done.
