"Pineapple Express" (2008) directed by David Gordon Green is an unapologetically dumb and fun movie which definitely deserves a watch.

Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) loves to smoke weed. While smoking in his car, he accidentally witnesses a man named Ted Jones (Gary Cole) and a corrupt policewoman named Carol (Rosie Perez) execute someone. The murderers don't want loose ends and are able to track Dale down due to his distinct and rare choice of weed, the "Pineapple Express," which he left on the ground outside the home. Dale becomes unlikely friends with his drug dealer Saul Silver (James Franco).

Pineapple Express is very funny and enjoyable. As with most comedy greats, this one features plenty of famous cameo appearances, so you can expect some laughs from Bill Hader, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Ken Jeong, and more. I particularly found the subplot about the two evil henchmen's relationship funny, and how one of them is getting "soft" now that he has a wife. James Franco is particularly great in this film because he offers a unique performance from the rest of his career and it's probably my single favorite he's ever done.

The action is surprisingly good for this genre's standards, offering a visceral R rated experience similar to something like "Pulp Fiction" (1994). The movie does not have many faults but it's inherently disposable so it can't be rated perfectly as much as I wanted to. There are examples of movies in this genre which are not disposable and carry larger impacts to them, such as the fantastic "Superbad" (2007) which I consider a golden mark of how to perfect the genre of late night comedy. The ending is a little bit wacky and stupid, as the jokes will take priority over logic, meaning you should expect everyone to start making the worst decisions possible in life threatening scenarios which can be a little annoying, and I also want to mention that Amber Heard's character and involvement in the film is extremely questionable and doesn't really serve any purpose.

Pineapple Express is very good and I would consider it one of my new comedy favorites that I will use to reference in the future. The dynamic duo between our leads is very strong and the action is above average for a typical movie like this.
