2001: A Space Odyssey - Movie Review
This review may contain spoilers.
"2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) directed by Stanley Kubrick is the single most boring movie I've ever made myself slog through. Back in 1968 this was probably considered great but it's nearly unwatchable by today's standards if I'm being totally honest.
Since the dawn of man, there has been a strange monolith protruding from the surface. Two astronauts are sent to Jupiter to discover the origins of this monolith. They are accompanied by a supercomputer called the HAL 9000. Their mission is kept highly secret as to not scare the public.
The film starts off rather poorly, making the audience sit through a few minutes of annoying sounds with nothing but pure blackness to stare at, making you question whether you purchased a faulty copy or not. Afterwards we jump into a nonsensical live performance of apes fending off predators, breaking bones, and worshipping the monolith. Then the real movie begins, and from here on out you can expect the slowest paced thing you've ever witnessed in your life. Every scene is intentionally shot to be as slow, dull, and empty as possible.
Now if you are someone who loves this movie, power to you, but for me, it's simply not entertaining and was not worth the 2 and a half hours I spent seeing it. The soundtrack has three different "settings" to it throughout, it's either completely quiet, incredibly annoying, or extremely iconic and fantastic. The pacing is so slow that I had to actively remind myself to stay awake and look at the screen. HAL's turn to evil was very predictable. The characters might as well have been unnamed as they are quite generic and uninteresting.
A Space Odyssey is nearly unwatchable in my opinion, and is devoid of entertainment value. Just a shower thought here, but making someone watch this from start to finish several times back to back with their complete attention would be an extremely effective form of torture I bet.
