"Pitfall: Beyond the Jungle" for Game Boy Color, released in 1998, is a revival of the classic Pitfall! series, known for its pioneering adventure gameplay. Developed by MumboJumbo, this installment takes players on a journey through lush jungles and treacherous terrain.

This installment retains the franchise's core elements: you're an explorer, leaping over treacherous pits, swinging from vines, and battling foes. However, it introduces a pickaxe as your primary weapon and humanoid enemies who operate on a one-hit kill basis.

A notable addition is the life meter, offering some forgiveness compared to the previous one-hit kill system. New challenges include moving platforms and five diverse worlds: jungle, cavern, volcano, jail, and a final confrontation. However, the game's difficulty spikes early and remains challenging throughout. Vines demand precise engagement, and some jumps require pixel-perfect timing.

Controls can feel sluggish, especially when attacking, hindering performance. Limited jump options lead to tricky landings. While Pitfall! was innovative in its day, modern adventure games offer more content. Despite striving to improve, Beyond the Jungle lacks depth, providing only basic gameplay.

The game demands significant level memorization, which may frustrate many players. Unless you relish tough games, this one's difficulty might deter enjoyment. Graphics are decent, with animated backgrounds and vines. However, enemy design could improve.

The music is passable, but not memorable, while sound effects are well executed. Ultimately, Beyond the Jungle is a challenging but frustrating game, featuring dated mechanics and limited features. It might not appeal to most players.
