"The Flintstones: King Rock Treasure Island" developed and published by Taito Corporation for the Game Boy is an adventure platformer that brings the beloved prehistoric family to the handheld gaming world. Released in 1993, the game revolves around Fred Flintstone's quest to find the hidden treasure of King Rock.

While working at the Slate Rock and Gravel Company in Bedrock, Fred Flintstone stumbles upon a treasure map. To unearth this valuable booty, he embarks on a quest spanning seven distinct levels, many culminating in boss encounters. These levels adhere to the classic side-scrolling platform design, demanding Fred's adeptness in leaping over chasms and evading adversaries. His weapon of choice are axes which he throws at an angle.

Hitting an enemy does not kill them instantly but stuns them; a state where they can be used as stepping stones. Hitting them while they are stunned kills them, but they respawn when Fred walks back to their starting location or at special skulls - those are mostly placed at sections where Fred can't progress without a made up staircase. Of course there are also power ups to collect: most of them only increase the points counter or refresh the life energy, but one allows Fred to ride his pet dinosaur Dino. This allows him to throw axes straight and jump higher, but Dino is lost when hit once.

The graphics, while limited by the Game Boy's hardware, capture the charm of the cartoon series, depicting familiar characters and settings.

While not without its limitations due to the Game Boy's hardware, the game offers an enjoyable experience for fans of the show and platformer enthusiasts alike. It remains a nostalgic gem that allows players to embark on a prehistoric adventure with the classic Flintstone family.
