"Gremlins 2: The New Batch" for the Game Boy by Sunsoft was released in 1990 to coincide with the film release. This adaptation of Gremlins 2 adopts the familiar platforming side-scrolling format with jumping, defeating enemies and confont bosses.

Initially, Gizmo wields a pencil as his weapon, hardly the weapon of a warrior. Naturally, he encounters the franchise's emblematic Gremlins. Added to the mix are lurking disembodied heads, spitting projectiles, and the peculiar Greta assaulting Gizmo with deadly kisses. The gameplay also features bats, mice, spiders, and more, all keeping Gizmo's hands full.

Felling enemies takes persistence; the first hit stuns, followed by a final blow. This strategy helps avoid retaliation and health loss. Fortuitously, power-ups offer assistance, including a one-shot musical note for instant kills and a temporary invincibility box. However, these must be obtained post-pencil, as combining them renders the pencil useless.

Platforming demands precision, with minor errors leading to health reduction or failure. Although some segments require blind leaps of faith or necessitate damage to proceed, most frustrations stem from player error rather than game design. Regardless, certain sections seem unfairly challenging, forcing leaps of faith or compromising health.

Conquering a level presents a mini-game where rapid button-mashing wins an invaluable extra life.

"The New Batch" is aimed at kids, but is challenging; success hinges on thorough level mastery—enemy patterns, leaps, and weapon strategy.
