I said I'd return to the urban nature of terrain parks, but I forgot to - anyhow, they started appearing the late 1980's and 1990's, and are modeled after urban skate parks. Boxes and rails to jib on are in fact based on skate park and urban railings and features, and some terrain parks even add objects like benches and picnic tables.
