Minecraft maps update when the player is within range of the real terrain of the map and around a specific distance. This short was done by switching the maps between when it was last updated. For example, I save the map with white terrain, keep it in my inventory and put it all over a wall, and I change the terrain to green. When I look at the map with my main hand next to the terrain, it changes all the maps to green.

Just kind of a neat trick
