Advanced Warfare featured a lot of firsts for Call of Duty. It was the first game in the franchise to feature exo-suits and advanced movement. It was the first to be developed by Sledgehammer Games as part of a three year development cycle. It was the first to feature Supply Drops, along with the complete lack of balance that their stat-changing weapons provided. And it was also the first to feature a Zombies mode not made by Treyarch.

The Zombies mode was born in World at War, and after Black Ops and Black Ops 2, it was a staple in the franchise. People were buying the game for this mode alone, and Activision wanted to capitalize on the demand. So after launching with a Survival Mode that’s been completely forgotten about today, Sledgehammer released four Zombies maps throughout Advanced Warfare’s DLC cycle. Sledgehammer’s take on the mode was far different from Treyarch’s. Advanced Movement in Zombies instantly separated this iteration from previous modes, and despite all three advanced movement titles having their own Zombies mode, it hasn’t returned since. Combined with many other changes, what’s been dubbed “Exo-Zombies” received mixed reviews at the time and has a polarizing reputation today.

I started playing CoD at the end of what most would call the franchise’s golden years. I started with Modern Warfare 3, but it was only after going back to World at War when I fell in love with the series, partially due to its Zombies mode. I caught up with all the games from CoD 4 onward before the release of Black Ops 2, and even stuck through Ghosts during most of its life cycle. But the series lost me during Advanced Warfare. I couldn’t see it as anything more than a shameless clone of Titanfall, and an inferior one at that. Combined with a multiplayer designed to sell microtransactions, a campaign that crashed my console every single time I attempted to load into the second mission as well as the lack of Zombies at launch, Advanced Warfare became the first and to this date only game I’ve ever returned for a refund. At this point onward, I was strictly buying Call of Duty for Zombies until the franchise could prove itself worthy again. The campaign and multiplayer had lost its Call of Duty identity, and the series was content to follow popular trends instead of establishing its own to this day.

I watched Advanced Warfare get updated on the sidelines throughout its life, and that includes the introduction of a Zombies mode. So I’m not exactly going in blind to this mode. I’ve seen the maps before, though the memories are few and far between. So while I have some familiarity with the four maps in this game, this will be the first time I’ve ever played them myself, as well as the first time I’ve played Advanced Warfare since it was released in late 2014. I’ve already played through the game’s campaign to re-familiarize myself with the game’s weapon sandbox and controls, and I can already tell this one is going to be a doozy. But with a long into out of the way, let’s jump into my first ever Exo-Zombies game of Outbreak.
