Call of Duty World War 2 was an attempt to regain a lost identity. Call of Duty started as a World War 2 shooter all the way back in 2003. The developers released a number of games that all took place during the Second World War before releasing a little old game in 2007 called Modern Warfare. The game launched the franchise and first person shooters in general into a new era, as the non-sci-fi first person shooters all followed Modern Warfare lead by transitioning away from World War 2 and into the modern era. World at War acted as a capstone to the World War 2 era of the franchise, and we stayed in and around the modern era for the next several years, before moving into the advanced movement era in 2014. The three games that were released in that advanced movement era were divisive to say the least. A large portion of the playerbase desperately wanted a return not just to boots on the ground combat, but to the style of game we saw at the beginning of the franchise. And after Sledgehammer Games brought us into the advanced movement era of Call of Duty, they took us out of it with the release of Call of Duty: World War 2 in 2017.
It’s worth noting that it wasn’t just fans of the multiplayer and campaigns wanting a return to form. While it’s forgotten about now, there was a portion of the Zombies community that was upset with the more fantastical, science-fiction style of Black Ops 3, and an even larger group that was upset with the cartoonish, whimsical tone of Infinite Warfare Zombies. The community wanted something a little more serious, a little more grounded, and gritty. They wanted a return to the style of Zombies seen in World at War, and that’s what they got when Sledgehammer revealed The Final Reich on July 20th, 2017, and it’s what they continued to get through the rest of the game’s lifecycle. While the game started out strong, each DLC map saw less and less interest over time. By the end, there was no Super Easter Egg or Mephistopheles boss fight to rekindle the flame, and the community looked ahead to the greener pastures of Black Ops 4. As it turned out, those pastures were actually quite blue.
If you saw the Advanced Warfare or Infinite Warfare videos, you know by this point I was only buying Call of Duty for Zombies, and given the overwhelming negative sentiment towards Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare Zombies at the time, that meant I was only buying Treyarch Zombies. So despite the initial promise of World War 2’s Zombies mode, I passed on it, and was thankful I did when each DLC map was received with less and less fanfare as time went on. But I’m here now, five years later, with a fresh copy of World War 2 and all its DLC, ready to go through every single mainline map for the very first time. Just like Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare, I’m going into each map as blind as memories from half a decade ago or longer will allow me. So having just finished the game’s campaign to familiarize myself with the mechanics and weapons, let’s see what Call of Duty: World War 2 Zombies has in store.
