Playing Pub Demo 03 for PS1 and methods to keep on playing locked playable
I'm showing you one of the four Pub Demos that exist for PS1, with only two of them having surfaced and subsequently dumped (this one and 04). In this video, I show you how a Pub Demo works and how you can keep on playing the locked playable included on each of them. The specific save file the Pub Demos make one for each is three blocks (24 KB) big and cannot be removed through normal means unless you use either a game with the Memory Card formatting functionality, a cheat cartridge or CD that also has that functionality, or softmods like Unirom or TonyHax (failed to realize that), both of which can be flashed onto one of your Memory Cards as FreePSXBoot applications. You can use a PS2 to remove the save file through normal means.
So, the way a Pub Demo works is that a Memory Card inserted into Slot 1 is needed to operate, and it will scan the card for a specific save file included on it. When there is no save file of the disc present on it, it will format the Memory Card entirely thus removing all information contained on it and make the save file afterwards. It is therefore advised to backup any of your vital game saves to other Memory Cards before playing one of those Pub Demos!
Each Pub Demo includes a playable demo that is locked behind an 8-digit code that use the face buttons as well as L1 and R1 as input symbols. The codes were printed onto Scratch Cards that were available through the purchase of beer from the brand sponsoring a particular disc. This disc for instance was sponsored by Kronenbourg 1664. Entering the correct code printed on one of the scratch cards will modify the save file as it includes all the codes represented by numbers that in-turn represent the input symbols used. It will change the first digit of the recently-entered code with an unknown symbol, rendering the code no longer usable and prompting the player to buy more beer of the same sponsored brand for more scratch card codes.
That was why I had to do some major research into finding the codes, which I was able to do when I examined the save file, and also discovered that those same codes are also found in the file DATA1.DAT located in the MAIN folder on the disc. (So much for having to find all those lost scratch cards basically.) I have made the 2400 codes of this and the other Pub Demo, 04, public via the Powerline OPSM Fanclub. Here's a link to the wiki page with the codes:
