Playing the original Ultimate Doom with raytracing (prboom-plus-rt)
Given the recent release of a certain other game bearing the "Doom" name that requires raytracing, I thought it was about time for me to finally look at this mod from 2022 that applies RT treatment to the original 4 episodes of Doom.
I wasn't necessarily expecting anything on the level of Quake II RTX, which I played back in 2021. It seems as if lighting is mainly tied to specific textures and sprites, and there appears to be some extra data that adds some extra lights - though I feel like they definitely missed some spots that could have benefited from them.
There are certainly some rough and/or wonky parts, such as huge stretches of e3m7 being dark. But it does pull off some neat moments, especially when arrangements of lights or pools of liquid come into play, or sometimes when enemies are only visible as silhouettes against lights further back. Unfortunately but understandably, the few "striped" hallways in the game are completely lost in the translation.

There's also a GZDoom raytracing mod for Doom II, which I unfortunately have had no luck running through Proton: https://github.com/vs-shirokii/gzdoom-rt/releases
