Playing Trailout again in 2024 - is it better?
I picked up Trailout when it was (i believe) first released as a free demo during Steam's annual Next Fest (I've found a few titles there that I enjoyed). I ended up buying it, hoping that it would turn into another Wreckfest.
It's a very pretty game - it uses DirectX 12, has "RTX" in the description, and it caused my pc to render certain parts like a slideshow when things got nuts. For context, I have a decent system - certainly not a top-end one any more, but it's good - I've got 32gigs of DDR5 ram, a 12gig RTX 3060, and all my games run off m.2 nvme drives. Clearly to run this game at full speed, you need a 40 series (or AMD Equivalent) video card to run it.
Thankfully there's a DirectX 11 option which my pc will likely play much more nicely with.
As for the game itself, it's fun. The voice acting has to be intentionally the way it is (you 'll know when you hear), so that 's something...and the driving physics is...unusual. The steering is equally very very tight and very very sluggish depending on what you're doing. In the game's defense, there are options to refine the steering (dead zone etc) but out of the box, it's not as nice as, say, Wreckfest - but i admit, I'm spoiled.
Physics, well, it's got physics. Not sure they're the kind most of us are used to, but they're there. I know this isn't supposed to be a hyper-realistic racing sim, and that it's definitely marketed as an arcade-style racer, but the best comparison i can give is that if you've played Crazy Taxi, this will make you feel right at home.
I do like this game, but i think i need to play it more before I decide whether it goes into my roster of games i will play long after they're popular. THOSE games include Midnight Club, Trackmania, Wreckfest, Wreckless, Flatout, and Midtown Madness.
Not terrible, not without its charms, but not easy to make a snap decision - after playing it off and on since its release a few years ago, i'm *still* not sure I like it.
Thank you for watching, if you like this video, please feel free to give it a thumbs up - or a thumbs down if you don't - and let me know what you think of it.
See you in the next Video!
