This part I take on Petalburg Gym, most of the Trainers use Normal type Pokémon, so if you started off with Torchic and evolved it into Combusken and it has Double Kick, you'll have an easy time, another good way is to catch a Makuhita or a Machop and evolve it into Hariyama and Machoke to make it easier, or maybe Machamp works well. Or you could use Rock types like Aron and Graveler or Steel types like Mawile to defend yourself against Normal type moves. Anyway the Gym Leader Norman (or Dad) is tough, you'll see if I can defeat him if this video.
