This session, by the way, is initial testing for this team. I don’t expect to have a high win rate; each time I complete a new team, I spend some time putting it to online battles to see what works, what doesn’t, and how opponents behave in the Pokémon’s presence. After all, I use a lot of Pokémon people don’t normally see online, so even I can’t predict how they’ll handle them, or which Pokémon they’ll select during Team Preview to face them with.

And I don’t necessarily know how well-equipped they are to handle certain threats. This team is designed with stuff like the Prankster Tailwind users in mind (Tornadus Incarnate and Whimsicott), Ogerpon, Dragonite, and Metagross, but I don’t know how well it can fight the likes of Porygon2, the new Paradox Pokémon, Smeargle, or Incineroar.

The purpose of this testing is to see what works and what doesn’t, and make revisions as necessary. Testing can take some time, especially if I’m having trouble finding my footing for a team. The Oinkologne Team, for instance, is actually not quite finished with testing yet, though I’d say it’s pretty close.

Type: Double Battle
Opponent: Big Smoke
Battle Court: Cabo Poco
Music: Northern Pokémon
My Pokémon: Debra (Zebstrika), Lena (Mightyena), Gustave (Feraligatr), Hipparchus (Hippowdon)
Opponent's Pokémon: Fjord (Tyranitar), The Wall (Bronzong), Brolurk (Golurk), Revenant (Ursaluna) (Hisuian)

One Pokémon that seems to be working better than I expected was Mightyena. This is the final form of Poochyena, a Pokémon found on the earliest routes of Hoenn, evolves soon, and, like many early game Pokémon of the time that wasn’t a starter, is meant to drop off in usefulness as the game goes on and encourages you to catch better, stronger Pokémon. Unlike their more peaceful counterpart Zigzagoon, Poochyena never got an update later on to give it a stronger horm, the way Zigzagoon got a Galarian form that could eventually evolve into Obstagoon. Hence, Mightyena has pretty low stats and unimpressive Abilities, and you’re not really supposed to bring one into the endgame or postgame, let alone battle other people with it. Yet, I’ve been getting some good usage out of this Mightyena on this team, and you’ll see that this Mightyena appears to give my opponent some trouble.

Though you haven’t seen him in battle yet, Pyroar is the other way around. This is a Pokémon that I thought could go far as he was during this session, particularly as I deliberately chose Rivalry knowing there would be a bunch of male Pokémon opponents would use (because every starter Pokémon is now available to use, and they all have an 87.5% chance of being male). In addition, Pyroar’s type combination makes him a natural enemy to Flutter Mane; as a Normal/Fire Pokémon, Pyroar resists Dazzling Gleam and Mystical Fire and is unaffected by Shadow Ball. As it seems, opponents seem to direct all their aggression at Pyroar, who quickly drops out of battle, perhaps BECAUSE there are a few key Pokémon like Flutter Mane whom Pyroar can handily beat, and my opponents know that. That is a Pokémon I will need to revise further.

My opponent’s Bronzong, The Wall, may be named after the album by Pink Floyd (which contains the song “Another Brick in the Wall,” which this video’s title is taken from). A fjord is an inlet created by a glacier, and a revenant is a lingering soul with unfinished business, either in the form of a ghost (like with Trevenant) or who has physically returned (likely the basis for this Ursaluna’s nickname, as the species had been extinct for some time except for the single Bloodmoon Ursaluna found in Kitakami). I don’t think they’re named after any creative work in particular.
