Here I show off a new Wild Area Event to Pokémon Sword & Shield, and this event is from December 31st till January 3rd, and to celebrate the new year, there will be increased Max Raid Battles for Magikarp, with a higher chance of getting a golden Shiny Magikarp, and if you defeat the Magikarp, you will earn a ton of Nuggets and some Dynamax Candies.
A new type of Shiny Pokémon are introduced in this game, there is the Star Sparkle and the Square Sparkle, the Square Sparkle has a much higher rarity than the Star Sparkle, and these Shiny Magikarp have the Square Sparkle, so this makes them more valuable.
There was a previous event that I have not yet shown where there was increased Delibird Max Raid Battles, but that might appear at some point in the playthrough, as I did record a lot of the parts far in advance, so you might see a Delibird Max Raid Battle at some point, do note that the Delibird event is over, but I do show some Delibird that I have obtained during the Christmas event.
Now to go over Magikarp, it is super easy, even a 5-Star Magikarp Raid can easily be done if you have a high level Grass or Electric-type on your team, and in rarer instances, Magikarp will have its Hidden Ability Rattled, which will become Moxie when it evolves into Gyarados, and it's an even bigger reward if you get a Shiny Magikarp with Rattled, because you will have a Red Gyarados with Moxie.
I did get a Shiny Magikarp before starting the recording session, so if you see me use a Red Gyarados at some point in my online battles, it was one of the Shiny Magikarp obtained during this event, I will not give away if any Shiny Magikarp appear in this video, but it's there.
There is also some Gigantamax Pokémon that you can get during the event, you can get Butterfree and Snorlax in both versions, and there are some version exclusive ones, in Sword, you can get Gigantamax Drednaw and Sandaconda, and in Shield, you can get Gigantamax Corviknight and Centiskorch.
If you get a Shiny Magikarp with Swift Swim, don't be disappointed, because it will have Intimidate when it evolves into Gyarados, and Intimidate is a great Ability, specially in Double Battles. The Magikarp do get Bounce, and even though it's not too good in competitive battling, Bounce becomes Max Airstream, which increases Gyarados's Speed, which is very helpful. Gyarados has a wide Physical movepool, it can get Waterfall, Ice Fang, Crunch, Aqua Tail, Earthquake, Outrage, Iron Head, Stone Edge, Power Whip, and a few others, and it can even learn Dragon Dance. Max Airstream is also great on Moxie Gyarados, so that way it can sweep entire teams thanks to the Speed boosts from Max Airstream, and the Attack boosts from Moxie, so Gyarados is one of the best Pokémon to Dynamax in battle. As for preference, Moxie is preferred for Single Battles, while Intimidate is more preferred for Double Battles.
One thing I never mentioned in my playthrough is that you are guaranteed to catch a Pokémon through the Max Raid Battles if you defeat it yourself, the only exceptions are events, so there is a chance that you might end up not catching the Pokémon, so they have their normal catch rate if you are doing this offline. If you doing it on multiplayer, the host will have the guaranteed catch rate, while the other players will have a catch rate as low as catching a Legendary Pokémon, specially against Gigantamax opponents. Thankfully, Magikarp is really easy to catch, so I would stock up on some Net Balls to ensure an easy capture, and if you ever get a really good Magikarp with ideal stats, it can become a Gyarados that is ready to battle, and now that Mints are a new addition to the game, if you end up with a bad nature, like Modest on a Shiny Magikarp, you can use an Adamant Mint to give it the stat growths as if it were to have an Adamant nature, and there is also Bottle Caps as well if you get it up to Level 100, and another new thing is that if Magikarp reaches Level 100 without evolving, you can use a Rare Candy so that it will evolve into Gyarados, so this is a chance that I appreciate, because if you had a Level 100 Magikarp in previous games, it was no good as it was not able to evolve, but they made that change, and it was a good change they made.
