Pokemon Yellow - 0 Exp Part 13: Elite Four Lance
Last battle of the Elite Four.
Lance uses the dragon-type Pokemon (as well as Gyarados and Aerodactyl who fit in according to appearance but not the typing), whom he describes as indestructible. Sure, Lance is off in his estimation of their strength as they didn't yet have any good STAB attacks in the first generation; however, their stats were as high as one would desire (mainly talking about Dragonite and Gyarados) and their Hyper Beams were always scary.
Now, there's nothing overkill about a Hyper Beam coming from any of the Pokemon here, among whom there isn't but one Normal-type to get the same type attack bonus. A Dragonite Hyper Beam sounds scary, but not any scarier than Raticate's Hyper Beam, and a joke compared to, say, Tauros's Hyper Beam. It's all about that base attack stat and that level difference, enormous this far into the Elite Four.
Fortunately, the dragons here do have counters. Gyarados is 4x weak to electric, and Electrode can OHKO it with Thunder (Starmie can't quite get a one-hit KO with Thunderbolt). It's only 70% accurate, but if we get lucky on the first turn, we probably should expect good things further into the battle as well.
Lance has 2 Dragonairs, each with a different set. The main difference is that the first one has Thunderbolt, which Cloyster and Starmie fear. Starmie can survive it with ease though, and might get lucky with a Blizzard crit, or maybe not. Golem would've probably been a far safer counter but I wanted a quicker kill.
The second Dragonair is ice/water-oriented and Cloyster is his best counter - resistance to water and ice, and scary physical defence to make Hyper Beam a joke.
Aerodactyl wasn't really good in this generation, lacking things like Earthquake, or even Rock Slide, to be of any threat. Golem just Rock Slides him to death.
Lance's final and strongest Pokemon is his Dragonite. This one is a jack of all trades, its moveset in the Yellow version containing Hyper Beam, Fire Blast, Blizzard and Thunder. There isn't a single Pokemon we can switch into him and be safe.
What I did here was paralyse him with Electrode (who's still faster at that level), getting a full paralysis on the same turn, then connecting a Thunder and, when low on health, selfdestructing. Dragonite's speed was reduced 4x due to paralysis now, allowing Cloyster to safely finish him off with Ice Beam without fearing a Thunder.
Lance is defeated; however, it seems another trainer emerged victorious becoming the current Pokemon League champion! Wonder who that could be? Well, that's a story for another video.
