Pokemon Sapphire - 0 Exp Game Part 3: Rival
On our way to the third gym, there is a forced encounter with the rival character (who's really watered down compared to the rivals in the first two generations IMO). I believe this is the only battle against the rival worth recording. At this point, the levels of the wild Pokemon are low, while his party is quite powerful and well-trained.
Since I picked Mudkip as my starter, he leads with Numel who is 4x weak to water (being fire/ground). Still, Water Gun from Wingull is only a 2HKO because of the level difference.
Wailmer is a lot more dangerous, being weak to electric (poorly represented at this point) and grass (Absorb and Bullet Seed are the best ones this far in) moves. If he starts using Rollout, we may not be able to stop him from sweeping our whole team.
Luckily, the AI is dumb and likes to have the Wailmer splash for no reason at all. This makes it possible to sleep him and try to damage him as much as possible before he wakes up. I also got lucky with a critical hit.
Grovyle is the most menacing one of them all, though I do think the other two starters would've been A LOT worse to face. Absorb is his only STAB, and it's really weak, plus it likes to use Pursuit to damage things rather heavily, killing them when they switch out.
Sometimes I can afford being killed with Pursuit, as is the case with sacrificing Gulpin in order to Yawn Grovyle. It will fall asleep next turn, allowing Makuhita to mess its accuracy up with Sand-Attack next turn. This makes Grovyle more easily beatable, as he will have difficulty connecting Absorb and getting his health back.
With some luck, he should fall to Zigzagoon's STAB Headbutts.
