Pokemon Yellow - 0 Exp Part 9: Giovanni
Final gym leader, and IMO the hardest of the gym leaders in this challenge (though that's not saying a whole lot). There are serious threats in the Yellow version that make the previously simple strategy of using a resistant Pokemon with super-effective attacks very risky, because Giovanni has considerably improved his movesets since the Red/Blue versions.
One thing he didn't improve is his Dugtrio. It has 3 ground-type attacks now, as well as Sand-Attack. Even Pidgey at lv. 5 can come out on him and lower his accuracy, and I actually show how that works. I quickly switch to Farfetch'd when Giovanni uses Guard Specs though, because after the item is used, my Sand-Attacks become ineffective.
Farfetch's is relatively safe to set up on Dugtrio as long as Sand-Attacks don't screw up his chances to hit (Fly is already inaccurate). However, the AI is just that stupid, and Dugtrio will try to use Earthquake, Dig and Fissure on him instead, all of which we're immune to thanks to the flying typing.
Now, Farfetch'd does indeed OHKO Dugtrio (a glass cannon) with a Fly after all those Swords Dances, but it doesn't do that well against Giovanni's other Pokemon. Persian survives one Fly easily (looking back, I really should've taught Farfetch'd Double-Edge because I found no use for it afterwards and it could have been used effectively against both Sabrina and Giovanni) and Nidoqueen takes 2 Flies easily, hitting back with Double Kick or overkill Thunder.
I managed to beat Persian on one of my attempts, but Slash is something that's impossible for Farfetch'd to survive. It's an auto-critical in RBY as long as the user has at least as much base speed as Sandslash or so (Venusaur's Razor Leaf also guaranteed a critical hit).
The Pokemon who walls Persian entirely is Cloyster. It has a crazy speed, and doesn't fear being in - Slashes don't really hurt it.
Nidoking and Nidoqueen are the main problem in this gym. In addition to Earthquake and Double Kick, they've been given Thunder, which strikes those water-types that are obvious counters to them, and with the level difference, Thunder is a sure OHKO - even against the specially strong Starmie.
Fortunately, Thunder is only 70% accurate, and if Starmie gets a critical hit or a Special fall with Psychic (22% and 30% respectively), it will beat Nidoqueen one-on-one, and will be able to weaken the King next (or actually try beating him too).
I got lucky on this attempt, with Queen's Thunder missing and King's turn being wasted because Giovanni had the irrational urge to use a Guard Specs on him.
Rhydon is Giovanni's prized last Pokemon, and his low speed and 4x weakness to water make him a joke. A shame too, his moveset was significantly improved in this version.
After this, we challenge the Elite Four in the next videos.
