One of the greatest threats to the future of Afghanistan is the growing of poppies. With over 90 percent of the world's opium coming from Afghanistan, revenue from the drug is fuelling the insurgency and adding to the UK's and Afghanistan's drug addiction problems. This months United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Report reveals the disappointing results that poppy growing is up 7 percent in Afghanistan as a whole. The Governor of Helmand, Gulab Mangel has been aggressive with his approach to poppy growing and as the sowing season comes round again, they are looking at the different methods to deal with the problem.
