Here I've completed the entire game of Portal firing a total of 26 portals. The chambers at the beginning of the game are generally pretty simple, but as the game progresses things can get pretty interesting.

There are 24 regions in the game: 20 test chambers (starting with 0 and ending with 19) and 4 escapes. That's an average of 1.083 portals per region. You have a portal gun in 22 of the 24 regions for an average of 1.182 portals per region in which you have the gun.

If anyone has a more efficient route for any of these chambers, I would be really interested to see. However, I'm pretty confident that this is the absolute minimum number of portals you need to beat the game.

Chamber 00: 0 portals

I somehow missed the portal gun entirely when I went through the fun ABH loop. That usually doesn't happen. After I recorded this, I found a video of a different method (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-9g3N9SLX0) which is simpler, but I still like mine anyway.

Chamber 03: 1 portal
I tried ABHing over the gap but deemed that impossible. I hate wall climbing with cameras. It's extremely annoying over any but the shortest distances.

Chamber 04: 0 portals

Chamber 05: 1 portal
More generic wall climbing, and a freaky bouncing cube.

Chamber 06: 1 portal
It takes 1 portal to do it the normal way too but I wanted to do something slightly interesting.

Chamber 07: 0 portals

Originally I was going to use transgenic86's speedrun route for this one because that happened to use 0 portals. Imagine my surprise when I found a radio under the panel, which made it significantly easier.

Chamber 09: 0 portals
I used to have a recording of this where I threw the cube through the window and it landed on the button. That was pretty cool. However, I lost that recording and now we're stuck with this.

Chamber 10: 1 portal
That door that I ABHed through closes immediately after you pass through it. It kept shutting in between me and the camera. It took a little while to figure out how to keep the camera.

Chamber 11/12: 4 portals
If you pick up the orange portal gun while the shot is in the air, it still hits the wall and opens an orange portal without increasing my portal count (I tested this in challenge mode). The edge glitch lets me skip chamber 12 entirely.

Chamber 13: 0 portals
There are routes out there that use 0 portals and do not require a camera, but like chamber 2, I had already recorded this by the time I found those. In any event, it's much more satisfying to use my own route than to just record something that someone else made (see chamber 18).

Chamber 14: 0 portals
AFHing is pretty cool. The route in my video is just a variation on turreu's route for this chamber (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tfIbEyXwxA).

Chamber 15: 3 portals
I had gotten this down to 6 portals without going oob when I suddenly thought, "Ah-ha! I'll go oob." Thus was this route born.

Chamber 16: 2 portals
Impassible fences are annoying. Cubes, however, are hardy and excellent.

Chamber 17: 0 portals

I saw a video on how to do this with 0 portals before I even considered making a least portals run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFkovYQyrNQ). I did not want to just go through the motions with someone else's route, so I invented my own. It involves endurance wall climbing as well as some ninja wall climbing.

Chamber 19 / E0: 4 portals
I discovered an interesting variation on the edge glitch that happens when you walk into the top of a portal on an angled panel. However, it only works if you fire multiple portals at the angled panel. This is why I fire twice. If there's a more efficient route for any chamber in this least portals run, I'm guessing it will be chamber 19, and it will take the form of someone figuring out how to do this glitch without needing to fire multiple times at the angled panel.

If you stand on the push button, you actually ride the button up and down. If you jump while it's rising, you get a pretty big speed boost. I've checked a bunch of other buttons in portal 1 and 2, and this one in chamber 19 is the only one I could find that does this.

E1: 4 portals
Doing this without oob requires 5 portals, I think, and the oob sets you up nicely for E2 as well. The positions of the first two portals line up the shot, and the second two portals are straight out of Transgenic86's portal done pro.

E2: 3 portals
Pretty straightforward stuff. Just portal over to the trigger.

E3 / end: 2 portals
I found out that if you crouch and get stuck, and then repeatedly save and load the game, you get lowered. If you happen to be on a ceiling, you get lowered through the ceiling. I used this in chamber 19 as well to get back in bounds.

It turns out that it's really really easy to wall climb with chairs.
