Postpartum Return to Run: Why Waiting Isn’t the Answer Anymore!
We used to just tell moms to wait… but now we know better. 🤯
Today, I had a super cool 6-week postpartum runner in for her 2nd postpartum visit, we completed her return-to-run readiness screen. She didn’t pass—but here’s the thing:
That’s not a dead end, it’s a starting point.
A few years ago, she wouldn’t have even been here yet.
She wouldn’t have done anything but walk until 6 weeks.
She wouldn’t have thought about screening for run readiness until 12 weeks.
And forget about doing ANY impact work until she passed the test.
But we’ve learned SO much. Now, instead of just waiting around, we can actually DO SOMETHING—we identified her deficits NOW and started progressive impact (appropriate for her healing tissues!) along with strength, core, and balance work.
Because here’s what we know: early intervention isn’t just about getting stronger. It helps with sleep, reduces postpartum depression, and makes moms feel like THEMSELVES again.
I’ve been working with postpartum runners for years, and even since I had my own kids, this shift in care is WILD. And honestly?
It’s about time.
Did you get any support like this postpartum? Or were you just told to “wait and see”? Let’s talk about it. ⬇️
