POV: You are fighting in the War to end all wars
Pov: You are fighting in the wars to end all wars
By Paul Fisherman
World War One or The Great War is one of the world's forgotten wars. It is growing more unknown because no one alive can relate to it. Our parents weren't alive to experience it or hear directly from the veterans like the Second World War.
It is universally agreed that it started when a Black Hand extremist named Gavrilo Princip assassinated Heir to Austro-Hungarian Empire throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand. His death would set off a war between Serbia and Austro-Hungary. The Russians would get involved and for some reason Germany would invade Belgium.
The conflict would only escalate and bring the full military forces of Great Britain and France in a War that would destroy hundred of miles of European land and see battles across the globe.
By the end of war, over 32 countries would directly contribute to the conflict? But countless others would contribute or suffer from the war. 9 million soldiers would died in combat. 23 wounded or missing and 5 million civilians would be killed in cross fire. Millions more would die from disease, starvation, future wars and succession movements.
The Europeans had been engaging in slaughter on industrial level for three years before the United States got directly involved. It is sad because they were told that the war would be over by the first year's Christmas. What they got was entire generations in seconds.
The video below perfectly illustrates what every battlefield looked like every day for 4 years, 3 months and two weeks
