Don't get too excited. It isn't really a challenge in the normal sense. It is a side-effect of escaping the first concubine encounter using the teleportation glitch, leaving Elika corruption-bound and unable to fight the concubine's sadistic whim... while you go sight-seeing around the palace all by yourself. Not a bad trade.

While Elika-less, you can't talk, do the "extended jump" or examine things that require Elika (at least some things), and you climb on vines faster. Also, if you die, you get teleported back to The Cavern which most likely is unloaded if you wandered too far, getting you stuck. The worst flaw of playing Elika-less, however, is that if you enter a cutscene, the characters freeze to their positions at the end. This at the very least prevents you from playing much of the game through in this mode... although, it is fun to see Elika still bound in the scenes.

At the first part of the vid I show my route of exiting the palace. Later I even went and played the first hunter stage (King's Gate) through without Elika. The freezing occurs even in a cutscene that would normally segue into a fight. Shucks.
