By jumping from the other side in a correct angle, it becomes about 100 times more likelier for you to get a jump to a direction you want, and you also rise in height enough to help you hit the plate. However, the game has placed the loading trigger in some very unsatisfactory unknown location, and as such this puzzle still can't be skipped. Tried this both before and after using the plate on the upper floor (first flying trip), but both times the result was the same.
