This is the story of a nameless scrap dealer who happens to be on his way home after a long day of work. However, while traversing the stars, he suddenly stumbles upon a seemingly abandoned ship in the middle of nowhere and, unable to resist his curiosity, decides to dock in order to discover the lone vessel’s secrets – which, as he will soon learn, were buried as well as left behind for a dangerous reason.

“Project Solis”, a short first-person horror game developed and released by itch.io creator Carbonado, succeeds in creating an intriguing atmosphere of dread, achieving said result through ambiance rather than cheap/unprofessional jump scares – which are entirely absent from the whole experience. As I explored the abandoned spaceship, carefully manoeuvring myself through its silent interior, each noise in the distance, paired with the simple yet mysterious plot, served to slowly but surely increase the ever-rising tension. However, whereas many independent horror games sooner or later defuse or even ruin themselves with one of the aforementioned jump scares, “Project Solis” manages to maintain its atmosphere from start to finish, culminating in a decent finale which makes the time invested seem well spent. In conclusion, I cannot recommend this one enough, especially if you enjoy space-related horror. Just remember – not everyone who indulges in curiosity may live to tell the tale...
