In this lecture we discussed the prostaglandins synthesis. Prostaglandins are basically derivatives of fatty acids that are arachidonic acid also known as arachidonate. Arachidonic acid is liberated from diacylglycerols or phospholipids present in membrane through an enzyme called phospholipase A2. The chemical structure of arachidonic acid is explained thoroughly along with other impressive concepts in prostaglandins. An enzyme PGH2 synthetase works on arachidonic acid and convert it into PGH2 which is the precursor of all prostaglandins. PGH2 synthase contain COX-1 and COX-2 along with peroxidase and follow cyclooxygenase pathway. The derivatives of eicosanoids like prostaglandins,leukotriens and lipoxins are also discussed. Lecture is important for biology class 11, mdcat,etea,neet and other entry tests. Students at BSc and BS level can also learn about prostaglandins in details.
