PS3 - SSD vs HDD - How long does it take to install a game?
Inspired by a previous video's comments, Let's do a 4-way test on how fast a game installation is, by starting a .pkg install at the same time on 4 different PS3s:
PS3 #1 (3001, HEN 3.1.1): Stock HDD 5400rpm
PS3 #2 (2501, Rebug D-REX 4.84.2): HDD 7200rpm
PS3 #3 (G01, Rebug D-REX 4.84.2): SSD (Silicon Power 1TB)
PS3 #4 (2501, Rebug D-REX 4.84.2): SSD (Samsung 870 EVO 1TB)
TL;DR:
1: HDD 7200: 18:12
2: SSD (Samsung): 18:37
3: HDD 5400: 31:45
4: SSD (SP): 38:58
HDD 7200 was just as fast as a proper SSD on PS3, interesting.
Samsung SSD gets a slow start but finishes close to the HDD 7200. HDD 5400 takes longer, and the SP SSD slows down a lot towards the end, finishing last.
FAQs:
"Um. PS3 is SATA 1, it won't max out a SSD's full capabilities so getting a SSD / getting a brand name SSD is a waste on PS3."
Not necessarily. While you won't get full bandwidth the SSD is capable of due to the old SATA versions in use on PS3, Random Read/Writes speed and reliable Cache is still a big factor in the overall speed the system attains. HDDs just can't attain the instantaneous read/writes that SSDs can do.
-- For brands, I've noticed some SSDs get extremely slow - to levels of slower than HDD - once cache is full, so it's better to get a good brand.
