Gameplay of Puzz Loop (Mitchell Corporation, 1998, Arcade).

This is where all your Zumas, Luxors and whatnot got their idea from. Puzz Loop hit Japanese arcades at the end of 1998, almost five years before the first clone that I'm aware of. Shoot coloured marbles into a chain progressing ever closer to your base, trying to create matches of three or more to eliminate them. The number of different colours rises as the game progresses, with extra power-ups and enemies making the game more hectic and complicated. The player loses when the chain is pushed against their home base.

Panic Mode, shown here, sends an endless chain of marbles towards the player, getting harder as they rise in levels. The goal is to reach level 99. Stage Mode is a progression of 5 stages with 5 predetermined levels each. The game ends when the player beats stage 5-5.

This was not a particularly good run, but gives a good enough impression of the gameplay, and includes one very close call! The difficulty is at a factory default of 3 (Medium).
