Puzzle De Pon!/R, 1995/1997 Visco Games/Taito
Cutesy puzzle game that's VERY similar to Puzzle Bobble/Bust A Move but with a strong Zodiac theme. Shoot colored bubbles upward to connect 3 of a kind (or more) to remove them from the playfield. Your goal is to free a giant symbol-- various symbols for the most part, but every 3rd level you free a Zodiac symbol! To free the symbols you must pop the bubbles above it that hold it in place. In Puzzle Bobble you had Bub and Bob, the dinosaurs from Bubble Bobble; here, you get a little girl. A couple more major differences between the two games are the lack of a descending ceiling in this one-- but don't say "Thank God!" just yet.. there's a timer that is rather strict and ends your game if it runs out! You can still be crushed by too many bubbles reaching the bottom, but the timer's a much greater concern. Another difference is the introduction of special bubbles-- these include bomb bubbles (eliminates bubbles it touches), star bubbles (eliminates ALL bubbles of the same color it touches), and arrow bubbles (called "allow" bubbles in the instruction screen, oops) that give you a line showing where the bubble will land when fired. Also, there are "barrier bubbles" that are already in place at the start of a level-- they can't be popped or "starred", but can be bombed or dropped when bubbles above them are popped. 39 levels await, and include freeing the 12 Zodiac symbols (and others between the Zodiac levels) and the final stage goal is to free the Solar symbol; doing so makes you the new God of the sun! That timer is brutal in this game but when you lose and continue, the level you left off from gets a bit easier (more special bubbles added). Followed by Puzzle De Pon! R, which is the exact same game but with different symbols inbetween the Zodiac levels. Suggested by YouTube user Juan Teddy Bear.
