Crazy Climber 2, 1988 Nichibutsu
Brutally difficult and unfair sequel to Crazy Climber, this was released Japan-only (to the best of my knowledge) 8 years after the original. If you thought the first was tough with its falling weights, this one will really make you scream in frustration! You have to learn the mechanics of climbing, just as you did in the original (they're fortunately similar), and you also need to learn which enemies/objects can automatically peel you off the skyscraper, which will glance off you harmlessly if you have at least one hand securely on a ledge, and which just bump you down a story or two. 6 buildings await your "pleasure", with a vehicle at the top ready to whisk you to the next building (like in the original). The second building is a weird one-- this one does NOT have a top for you to reach-- you won't get there! A chopper whisks you away partway up the building to the next one; you can't prevent this. Odd.. Anyway, along the way you'll see girls sitting in windows-- climb onto them (I couldn't really put that any better, unfortunately) and you get a "step bonus" that increases the amount of points you get for advancing one story, by either 50 points or 100 points. Other annoying new hazards in this game include jet fighters that shoot at you, cranes that can pick you off the building, billboards with women that kick you off the building, falling statues (?), and more! The game just gets totally unfair from time to time with the sheer number of falling objects and deadly enemies, but learning the climbing mechanics and which enemies are instantly fatal, only fatal if you don't have solid purchase with at least one hand, or non-fatal (just bump you down one or more stories), is essential to surviving a few buildings in this game.
