Pwnery's Reloading Bench - .43 Beaumont (11x52mmR)
The last time I did one of these was on my 42nd birthday - the last time I did a talkie one of these .. probably quite a bit longer. Welcome back to Pwnery's Reloading Bench where I'm going to take you back 150 years - that's not a typo. We're going to handload .43 Beaumont for the 1871/88 Dutch Beaumont-Vitali rifle. This is not a video that's often made - and especially made the way I'm about to show you. Sure, you can call up CH4D and drop 3-hundo on a custom die set (and I most likely will eventually myself) - but for now, the purpose of this video is to show you a couple of things :
* You can keep these old girls running
* You can do it with parts die sets you may already own
* You can work this brass with minimally invasive effort (but a little armstrong engineering may be in order)
* You can load what was once originally a Black Powder cartridge with a great, clean, and efficient smokeless powder alternative with fantastic results (thanks to IV8888 for the recipe!)
The .43 Beaumont, or 11x52mmR was an updated cartridge upon the adoption of the Vetterli magazine conversion. The Dutch first used the 11.3X50R Beaumont M71 cartridge with a bullet diameter of 11.8mm (0.464") having a muzzle velocity of 405 m/sec. (1330 fps). Later in 1878 the new 11X52R Beaumont M71/78 cartridge was introduced with a bullet diameter of 11.6mm (0.457") having a muzzle velocity of 435 m/sec. (~1440 fps). The brass cartridge originally fired a 385-grain hardened lead round nose projectile with 77 grains of black powder at a velocity of 1,444 feet per second at the muzzle.
In today's video we're going to use a bullet slightly lighter, and a smokeless powder which is known to be one of the fastest burning on the market and a great alternative to black powder. The recipe will be available towards the end of the video for your reference.
