Quake 4 (PC) Gameplay -No Commentary-
Like Doom 3, I see Quake 4 as an often misunderstood entry into it's respective series. Like Doom 3, this is Quake in a post-Half Life/HL2 era, and it also uses the popular "Squad shooter" formula that was popular at the time thanks to games like Halo/Halo 2. I know that a lot of people didn't like the rail shooter/turret scenes, or the vehicle scenes in general, and understandably so. However, they don't ruin the experience for me, because in the higher difficulties, the gunplay and combat in this game is as intense as ever. Honestly, I've always liked Quake 4 despite it's flaws, and I recently picked up the Xbox 360 version of Quake 4 which came with an HD remaster of Quake II.
Like Doom 3, Quake 4 one of those FPS games in that strange gap of time post Half-Life, and before Modern Warfare. I'm not sure what this era of PC FPS games is called, but it's the one that gave birth to games like Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey, F.E.A.R., Far Cry, and even the mighty Crisis before Modern Warfare came and changed the landscape of FPS games to being focused on the "modern" shooter. Halo was the only franchise big enough to survive the Modern Warfare effect on gaming, and judging from Reach and beyond, it might not have survived either.
Either way, QUake 4 is worth playing in my book. I'm actually running the retail version of the game, not the Steam version. I changed the aspect ration, and the resolution in the Config file. On my laptop, where I also have this installed thanks to a USB DVD drive, I used a visual Tweeker mod to change it. Both ways are viable ways to do it.
