I don't play sports games, but NHL 2001 is easy to pick up and play, and easy enough to win at that even a non-sports gamer like myself can win against the computer. This game is significant because it was a PS2 launch game, and while the graphics might look primitive by today's standards, they were mind blowing in the year 2000, representing a next generation leap in graphical fidelity, player animation, and TV-style presentation.

I like this game, even though I rarely play sports games, because it is easy to just pick up and play, and it's fun. The gameplay is fast, and the penalties are low, so it definitely give the game more of an arcadey feel to it. I don't have any of the sequels, and I really haven't played any other hockey games in the past besides NHL 97 on the Sega Saturn (bought it factory sealed from some kid in high school for like $2), so I don't know if they expanded the arcadey feel more, or if they brought it back to being more of a sim. What I do know is, NHL 2001 was a great launch game for the PS2, and is still really fun to play.
