Quake II Mission Pack: Ground Zero - Full Singleplayer Playthrough
The second official mission pack, this time by Rogue Entertainment. That's cool, because both second mission packs for Quake 1 and 2 were made by them.
This time, another Marine's main mission is to destroy the Gravity Well, which is trapping the Earth fleet in orbit. I just love the fact that all of those Quake 2 stories just have one Marine surviving from their respective squads and then they just manage to take 'em all out by themself. Well, that's typical for first-person shooter games, so...
Anyway, the campaign is once again put into five units, like in The Reckoning. I felt like I got more lost at times, even if this is just a casual replay. New enemies include Turrets, which come out from walls and ceilings and fire blaster bolts or rockets. There's also the Stalker, which can crawl on the ceiling. Also introduced is Daedalus, which is a green Icarus with a Power Screen. Cool, now I can send both of 'em falling into the ocean. And lastly, there's the Medic Commander which is a stronger version of the Medic that can summon new enemies. A bunch of new weapons are in the game, as well. The ETF Rifle fires explosive-tipped, armor-piercing flechettes. The Plasma Beam fires a straight powerful energy beam. The Proximity Launcher is like the weapon of the same name from Scourge of Armagon, fire it at a surface and it will go off when an enemy approaches it. The Tesla Mine will attack enemies with lightning when approached by enemies. The Chainsaw is the only melee weapon in any official Quake 2 game, and is an arm-mounted chainsaw used by slashing enemies unlike its Doom counterpart. There's also the Disruptor, which fires these super-powerful balls of black energy particles. That weapon... yeah, it didn't make the final cut. The weapon's unique ammo source, Rounds, still happened to appear in the singleplayer game. I'm guessing it was because of the patch I played on that made the weapon and ammo available because the Disruptor also appeared in the deathmatch maps. The cut weapon was finally made officially available in the 2023 remaster.
There are also plenty of new powerups introduced, but I'm not gonna go over them here.
