Quake - Qtest1 (Public multiplayer test)
A publicly-released prototype version of Quake that demonstrates the game's multiplayer capabilities. All games are in deathmatch, and comes with early versions of the first three deathmatch maps of the final game. But yeah, you can make custom maps for this version as well.
As you can see, there are many differences between this version and the final version. Many graphics and sounds are different, and most of the weapons look different than what they were in the final game. All power-ups and some weapons are also absent from this release. The "Chainlightning Gun" never saw the light of day...
Like in Doom, only one on-screen message could be displayed at a time, but this time you've got the console to display all of them, of course.
I think it would be interesting if we could play multiplayer games with this thing today, be it with DOSBox or a real DOS computer. But I think using a real machine is more suitable for Internet play, gotta have DOS or Win9x since it won't run on modern OSes or source ports.
