QUEST 2 PRICE INCREASE! Is the Quest 2 still worth it in 2022?
423I don't think I've ever seen anything like this before, having worked in videogame retail for 12 years I can't recall any piece of gaming hardware increasing in price TWO FULL YEARS after launch by £100/$100... this is the reality of the unprecedented Quest 2 price increase that was just announced, if you're in the market to buy a Quest 2 then you have just a few days to secure that original price point before it indefinitely rises to a new RRP. I wanted to make a short video to share a few thoughts on the Quest 2 price increase and to answer the question many will likely have now; is the Quest 2 worth it even at this new price? I firmly believe that the Quest 2 remains the best value proposition in VR hardware right now, for those wanting to get into the medium it's the best (and highest quality for the price) place to start... however that's not to say that I don't find this price increase CRAZY!
My gut feeling is that something like this would never have happened if the Quest 2 had genuine competition in this field, with no real challenger to their dominance of the entry point/standalone VR market Meta are free to raise the cost and still stand unchecked as the best value piece of hardware on the market. With the Meta Quest Pro / Meta Cambria headset right around the corner it could also be a decision designed to bring the prices of the two headsets slightly closer together in an attempt to get consumers to purchase upwards if the difference isn't so vast. Or maybe it really is the rising cost of components in a medium that's still in it's relative infancy...
