Thunderstrike 2 (or Firestorm: Thunderhawk 2 outside of North America) is an arcade helicopter flight simulator, and was developed by Core Design and published by US Gold (in North America) and Core Design in Europe and Asia in 1995 for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and MS-DOS. In the game, players take the role of a special operations helicopter pilot who is tasked with different goals and challenges. The game operates largely as a psudo-open campaign, where the player can pick from one of several "crisis situations" across the world, and then procede through the missions in order for points. The missions and locations vary quite a bit, ranging from taking out a druglord's runways and convoys in South America, to stopping pirates in the South China Seas, to intervening in the Balkans Crisis. Points (and promotions) come from successfully destroying primary targets and completing mission objectives while losing missions or leaving the combat zone before finishing the mission results in a demerit. Getting three demerits ends the campaign and forces the player to start over (or load the game from the password system). While the graphics are a little choppy on the Saturn version, the sound design and music are phenominal, and the gameplay is very solid, with a good weapon selection and a nice variety of mission objectives. The game is the second in the series, being followed up Thunderhawk: Operation Phoenix for the PlayStation 2 in 2001.
