In this video we'll be testing ID Software's 2016 Doom with Vulkan vs OpenGL. We'll be using the newly released Radeon RX 480 graphics card to test both Doom in OpenGL and Vulkan mode, with both 1440P and 1080P resolution used in our benchmarks and tests..
During the benchmark Doom's running at the highest graphical settings, and the RX 480 has everything set to default, and no overclocking on an I7 4770K, 16GB RAM and Windows 10 64 Bit.
The RX 480 drivers we're using are 16.7.2 drivers (released a 9th July, 2016). There's a clear performance difference using Doom's Vulkan API, with frame rates hitting over 100 - 130FPS at 1080P, and often sitting north of 60 or 70 FPS at 1440P, which is damn impressive!
We're sure that if you overclocked the Radeon RX 480 a little, you could see even higher performance gains.
It's clear that the lower overhead of Vulkan and higher amount of CPU threading has a massive impact on Doom's performance, with the RX 480 churning out frames at drastically reduced MS rendering time.
