RadiOdyssey - Deke Slayton
Date of Birth: March 1, 1924
Of the seven original Mercury Astronauts, one would never fly in space, and yet end up contributing more than any of his fellow Mercury veterans. From helping keep the hothead team in line to single-handedly managing the entire flight schedule for Gemini and Apollo, Deke Slayton's decisions would impact the space program to its very core, until finally getting a flight of his own, on the very last Apollo spacecraft to ever fly.
