Playthrough of Taito's 1988 hack and slash platformer for the Arcades, Rastan Saga II.

Taito’s Rastan Saga II, released in arcades in 1988, is a side-scrolling hack-and-slash action game and the sequel to Rastan. Players once again take control of the barbarian warrior Rastan as he embarks on a quest to defeat an evil overlord and his monstrous minions. Unlike its predecessor, which had a darker and more atmospheric fantasy setting, Rastan Saga II features a more colorful visual style while maintaining the sword-swinging combat that defined the original game.

Gameplay consists of traversing various stages filled with enemies, environmental hazards, and platforming challenges. Rastan wields a sword and can acquire different weapons and power-ups along the way to enhance his attack power. However, the controls are more rigid compared to the first game, with limited attack angles and movement options, making combat feel more methodical and deliberate. The enemies include mythical creatures such as skeleton warriors, dragons, and demons, all of which require precise timing and positioning to defeat.

The game’s visuals are more vibrant and detailed than the original, with larger character sprites and intricately designed backgrounds inspired by fantasy settings. The soundtrack is composed of dramatic, medieval-style tunes that enhance the sense of adventure and combat. However, the gameplay received criticism for its stiff controls and slower pacing compared to other action games of its time.

While Rastan Saga II retained the core barbarian fantasy theme of its predecessor, it failed to capture the same level of excitement and fluidity, making it less well-received than the original. Despite this, it remains a notable entry in Taito’s arcade library and a piece of classic hack-and-slash history.
