Playthrough of SNK's 1998 run-and-gun game for the Arcades, Metal Slug 2.

Metal Slug 2 is a brilliant evolution of its predecessor, refining its run-and-gun gameplay with new characters, weapons, and vehicles while retaining the same frantic action and charming humor. Set two years after the first game, the story follows Marco and Tarma as they join forces with newcomers Eri and Fio to stop General Morden’s latest coup—only to find themselves facing an unexpected alien invasion.

Graphically, Metal Slug 2 has detailed sprites, expressive animations, and richly designed backgrounds that bring its chaotic world to life. The enemy variety is vastly improved, introducing desert soldiers, monstrous spiders, and even mummies that can turn the player into one. The attention to detail extends to the character transformations, where overeating can make the heroes comically overweight, altering their movement and attacks.

The sound design remains top-notch, with an energetic military-themed soundtrack that perfectly complements each stage, alongside crisp, satisfying gunfire and explosion effects. Gameplay-wise, Metal Slug 2 builds on the original formula with more special weapons—such as the laser gun, flame shot, and rocket launcher—as well as an expanded arsenal of super vehicles, including a camel-mounted machine gun, a powerful robot, and a jet fighter.

Each mission is packed with intense shootouts, daring rescues, and explosive set pieces, culminating in a dramatic final battle where players must team up with the Rebel Army to defeat the alien threat. The controls are smooth and responsive, making vehicle operation feel even better than before.

While the game suffers from occasional slowdown due to its high level of detail and enemy density, Metal Slug 2 remains a genre-defining arcade experience. It takes everything great about the original and amplifies it, cementing its status as one of the finest run-and-gun games ever made.
