Playthrough of Christophe Andréani's 1990 puzzle-action game for the Game Boy, Bubble Ghost.

Bubble Ghost, developed by Christophe Andréani, is a unique puzzle-action game first released in 1987 for computers and later adapted for the Game Boy in 1990 by Opera House. Players control a whimsical ghost whose sole ability is blowing gusts of air to guide a fragile bubble through a haunted mansion. The challenge lies in navigating narrow corridors, avoiding hazards like candles, spikes, and moving obstacles, and ensuring the bubble doesn’t pop. Each of the 35 rooms features unique layouts and escalating difficulty, demanding precision, timing, and strategy.

The Game Boy version boasts simple yet charming graphics, transforming the ghost into a cartoonish character with expressive eyes. Unlike the darker computer versions, the Game Boy edition features a brighter, more inviting atmosphere. The controls are streamlined, with automatic rotation based on the ghost’s position, making movement smoother and more intuitive. The bubble physics feel dynamic, responding realistically to the ghost’s puffs of air.

Early levels focus on basic mechanics, such as blowing out candles, but the challenge intensifies with winding pathways, retractable knives, force fields, and snakes. While there’s no time limit, players earn bonus points for completing rooms quickly, emphasizing skill over speed. Shortcuts add strategic depth, allowing skilled players to bypass rooms by navigating tougher routes, introducing risk and reward. The Game Boy version removes the breath-overheat mechanic from earlier releases, eliminating the frustration of running out of air and allowing players to focus on maneuvering the bubble.

Compared to its computer counterparts, the Game Boy version is more refined and accessible, with smoother controls, balanced pacing, and a more appealing presentation. Though it never achieved mainstream success, it remains a cult classic among Game Boy enthusiasts, celebrated for its originality and engaging mechanics. Unlike traditional puzzle games, Bubble Ghost emphasizes finesse and patience over reflexes or logic.
