We read and react to our high school writing from about eight years ago; It lead to a revealing discussion digging out past experiences incl Nami’s childhood experience with abuse & neglect, Michael & Nami’s relationship in its early years, and how things have looked in the process of growing a mature & goal-oriented relationship through the last decade.

I was really excited to share this video because initially it was Michael’s idea for the family channel but as we progressed to film & then later edit, we found it had unfolded in such an interesting & revealing way.
We always hope our openness & vulnerability can become an edification to you in any way & we hope you are encouraged & know you are not alone through whatever you go through.
During the time I wrote these pieces, I was so thankful I had a group of friends from my youth group who played maplestory with me- they really were my only friends at the time. I remember they threw me a surprise birthday party (which I have a vlog of somewhere on this channel) and I was sobbing after one of my friends said Nami we love you 😭 at that moment I really felt like she was telling me I didn’t need to feel like I wanted to die as much as I did.
I think when I was feeling my most alone, these handful of friends + Michael were really there for me to rely on when I looked around and saw they were ppl I could turn to.
During one of my small group meetings at youth, I remember sharing ‘I’m so depressed’ just expressing how I’ve been feeling but my group leader at the time asked me ‘Are you really depressed?’ I said ‘I think so?’ since I didn’t know what he meant at that age. he said ‘Are you actually clinically depressed? Were you diagnosed by a doctor at all?’ I really remember at the time feeling like oh I must not be not ok, I must be fine, I never got any diagnosis so everything is just what I’m feeling, it’s not really a thing unless a dr tells me. I think at the time I felt really invalidated and that what I was feeling and going through wasn’t real. I think he should’ve said that this could be a real struggle and he would suggest me to see a professional if it’s something recurring I’m going through. After I graduated high school, I saw a professional counselor through my university resources and it really helped me a lot.
I think what I want to share is sometimes people go through these things whether physical, emotional, mental, medical, or spiritually where we need to work through it through community and it’s not just about being happy or thinking happy. We all experience something & we need to use it to grow & learn more about ourselves, to help others who experience similar struggles.
