Rebuilding a Village in a Dungeon Crawler Roguelite | Never Grave: The Witch And The Curse demo
Hello everyone! This is yet another demo. This is Never Grave: The Witch and the Curse, and don't let the graphics fool you, this is not a Hollow Knight copycat (even when background and music might tell you so), this is a Dungeon Crawler Roguelite, pretty similar to Cult of The Lamb, where you play as a hat that can control... corpses(?) in order to fight. The main puppet being this little witch, who you will use to get into these dungeons to kill enemies, collect resources, get upgrades that will only work for the run, try to kill the boss, and then go back to use your collected resources to build a village and get permanent upgrades.
It pretty much feels like a mix between Cult of the Lamb and Hollow Knight, and it is a really nice concept with a lot of potential, but there are still a bunch of things I don't like about it. Starting by the fact that you don't stagger enemies and they just deal a lot of damage; maybe they did it to give more importance to the meta-progression, but if you add the lack of healing per run, it might get really frustrating (adding also the fact that you get damage only by touching enemies...). Also the upgrades felt pretty underwhelming... even the "epic ones" felt quite meh. I mean, one was "poison enemies when they attack you", but if they attack you three times you are dead enemies, so what's the point? It's way better to go for the kill (and it's not like the poison will last forever against the boss either); the damage reduction was barely noticeable and the max hp upgrades are a laugh... I mean, you might find 5 of them during a run, with each one being 2 hp, but they were dealing around 18 damage per hit, so maybe if you are lucky they will save you of one hit. Again, all of this might be because they want you to feel the difference after upgrading in the village, but I just don't think it's right.
Finally, the boss was a damage sponge with huge hand that you had to hit, but if you touch them, you get damage... A quite long, boring and frustrating fight if you ask me.
With all this being said, I enjoyed the overall experience and I still think there is great potential and that a lot of people would enjoy this game, so check it out if you have the chance.
