I never played this game in 1990, but I did read a lot about it in Sierra Online's magazine and other gaming magazines. I did play the other simulators developed by Dynamix, like A-10 1989, and Aces of the Pacific 1992. Those were very good games at the time, they were state of the art at the time. There were other World War 1 simulators, like Knights of the Sky from Microprose, and I did have this game. I shot down hundreds of aircraft when I played Knights of the Sky, and I played with the mouse and keyboard. The animation was very smooth, and Red Baron was also very smooth.

The graphics for Red Baron may look crude by today's standards; however, it was state the art back in 1990. I did play the Amiga 500 version of Red Baron at my friends house about 25 years ago, and I have to say the PC version had smoother animation. The Amiga version had better graphics, but it was slow and choppy compared to my PC. My PC was a 386 sx-16 mhzs computer, 1 mb of ram, and a VGA graphics adapter. The PC version didn't have any skipping frames, it ran a lot smoother. The CPU used on the Amiga was a RISC processor, so it had superior integer computational abilities while the Intel 80386, & 80486 cpus had better float point or real number computational abilities. For flight simulators, float point or real numbers are better, because you need to compute physics. Integer are whole numbers, like 1, 2, 3, 100, 100,000,000, etc, and real numbers are 1.1113, 1.985252, 10,000,000.11141414141, etc.

I thought this game was great, and it had better graphics than Knights of the Sky. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough money to buy this game in 1990, I think it cost like $59.99. It was quite expensive at the time. The game came in a nice thick box, and it came with a thick instruction manual as well. Back in those days, game publishers gave you a big manual with a lot of educational information. The manual showed you the kind of airplanes which were in the game, the specs of the airplanes, the history of the airplanes, and other information. Seldom do game makers provide you with any instruction manuals now a days.

If you had not played this piece of gaming history, I would recommend you to try it out. All in all, I would give this game a 9.5 out of 10.
