Red Steel was a first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Paris exclusively for the Nintendo Wii, featuring gunplay and swordplay that take advantage of the Wii remote's motion-sensing capabilities. Released alongside the Wii in November of 2006, it was the game that Nintendo hoped would get the Halo audience interested in its new console. Despite being critically panned, Ubisoft announced in the summer of 2008 that they were working on a sequel, that it would succeed where Red Steel had failed, and that it would use Nintendo's then-recently-announced Wii MotionPlus accessory.

Two years have passed since development began, and Red Steel 2 is now available for public consumption. Aside from the continued heavy use of gun- and swordplay, Red Steel 2 distances itself as much as possible from its predecessor; set in the cel-shaded Nevada desert town of Caldera, it follows an unnamed member of the Kusagari clan seeking vengeance against the Jackal thugs who wrecked his stomping ground and stole his sword. Multiplayer is gone, combos are reasonably easy to pull off, and the MotionPlus makes swordfighting a lot more tolerable. However, Red Steel 2 is not without its faults — it serves as a test vehicle for the MotionPlus the way Red Steel demoed the Wii, and some of the motion-controlling feels shoehorned-in and a little janky.

I am Phenwah, reminding you that things could've been worse. Welcome to Red Steel 2.
