Rediscovering the Joy of Game Boy Games in 2023
Hey Squares - been really getting into the Game Boy lately, and I noticed that there's a bunch I've always come back to through the years. Let's take a look.
"Dr. Mario" is a puzzle game developed by Nintendo for the Game Boy and other systems in 1990. Players control the titular Dr. Mario, who must eliminate colored viruses by tossing capsules into a playing field to create vertical or horizontal matches of three or more capsules of the same color. The game's fast-paced gameplay, catchy music, and addictive mechanics have made it a fan favorite for decades, and it continues to be a popular game today.
"Pokemon Yellow" is a 1998 Game Boy game and an enhanced version of the original "Pokemon Red and Blue" games. In this game, players control a young trainer on a quest to catch, train, and battle with Pokemon in order to become the best Pokemon trainer in the world. Unlike the previous versions, in "Pokemon Yellow", the player starts with Pikachu as their starting Pokemon and follows the story from the popular anime series.
"TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan" is a 1990 Game Boy game based on the popular "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" franchise. In this side-scrolling action game, players control one of the four turtles as they battle their way through various levels to rescue their kidnapped friend, April O'Neil, and stop their archenemy, Shredder.
"Donkey Kong" is a 1994 Game Boy game that is a faithful adaptation of the original arcade classic released in 1981. Players control Mario as he attempts to rescue his girlfriend, Pauline, from the clutches of the giant ape, Donkey Kong. In addition to the classic stages from the arcade game, "Donkey Kong" also features new levels and power-ups that add to the gameplay experience.
"Motocross Maniacs" is a 1990 Game Boy game developed by Konami that combines racing and platforming elements to create a unique and challenging experience. Players control a motocross rider as they race through a series of increasingly difficult courses filled with obstacles and jumps.
"Kwirk" is a 1989 Game Boy puzzle game developed by Atlus. Players control the titular Kwirk, a tomato who must navigate through a series of mazes to reach the end goal. The game features a variety of obstacles, such as blocks, holes, and conveyor belts, which must be navigated around to progress. "Kwirk" also includes a level editor, allowing players to create and share their own custom levels. With its charming graphics, challenging puzzles, and fun gameplay,
"Ninja Gaiden Shadow" is a 1991 Game Boy game developed by Tecmo that follows the story of Ryu Hayabusa, a young ninja on a mission to stop an evil organization from taking over the world. The game features a mix of platforming and action elements, with Ryu using his ninja skills to navigate through various levels filled with enemies, traps, and obstacles.
"Burger Time Deluxe" is a 1991 Game Boy game developed by Data East that is an enhanced port of the classic arcade game "BurgerTime". Players control the chef, Peter Pepper, as he navigates through various levels filled with ingredients to create hamburgers. The game features a mix of puzzle and action elements, with players using their wits and reflexes to avoid enemy food items while creating their burgers.
"Mole Mania" is a 1996 Game Boy game developed by Nintendo and designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of iconic franchises such as "Super Mario" and "The Legend of Zelda". Players control a mole named Muddy as he navigates through a series of puzzle-filled levels to rescue his family from the evil farmer Jinbe.
"Final Fantasy Legend" is a 1989 Game Boy game developed by Square (now Square Enix) and the first game in the "SaGa" series. Players create a party of four characters and embark on a journey through a post-apocalyptic world filled with monsters and magic. The game features classic RPG gameplay, with turn-based battles, character customization, and a deep, branching storyline with multiple endings.
